Shadow and Bone

Book/ Author: Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo
Publisher: Square Fish
Series?: Yes "Grisha Trilogy"
Rating: 5 Stars!
Angst Level: 2

Surrounded by enemies, the once-great nation of Ravka has been torn in two by the Shadow Fold, a swath of near impenetrable darkness crawling with monsters who feast on human flesh. Now its fate may rest on the shoulders of one lonely refugee.
Alina Starkov has never been good at anything. But when her regiment is attacked on the Fold and her best friend is brutally injured, Alina reveals a dormant power that saves his life—a power that could be the key to setting her war-ravaged country free. Wrenched from everything she knows, Alina is whisked away to the royal court to be trained as a member of the Grisha, the magical elite led by the mysterious Darkling.
Yet nothing in this lavish world is what it seems. With darkness looming and an entire kingdom depending on her untamed power, Alina will have to confront the secrets of the Grisha . . . and the secrets of her heart.

Me:
I have no idea how I came so late to the party that is Shadow and Bone. I'd heard about it in passing. The occasional tweet, an update on Goodreads... But for some weird reason, I never picked it up. Even though it's pretty much everything I love in a book. Likable heroine learns she's much more than she thought, learns kick-a skills, saves people... Magic, adventure, romance... Needless to say, I really enjoyed it. It was exciting, I liked the characters, great world building.

You:
I recommend this to you if you are looking for a good fantasy read, or like characters that start off average and become amazing.

I am glad about one thing. I didn't have to wait very long for the second book!
Oh, and about the "Angst Level". Don't you ever get tired of too much angst in a book? Or just want to know how much to expect when you pick up a book? Me too. So I'll be including an "angst level" on all of my reviews from now on. Happy reading!

  3. You're only fashionably late to the party. This book has everything I love too. I love waiting for more books in the series to come out so I don't have to wait. I've heard Siege and Storm is really good!
